Nominal scale

A scale whose numbers serve only as labels or tags for identifying and classifying objects with a strict one-to-one correspondence between the numbers and the objects.

Noncomparative scale

A scale in which each stimulus object is scaled independently of the other objects in the stimulus set.

Nonhierarchical clustering

A procedure that first assigns or determines a cluster center and then groups all objects within a prespecified threshold value from the center.

Nonmetric ANOVA

An ANOVA technique for examining the difference in the central tendencies of more than two groups when the dependent variable is measured on an ordinal scale.

Nonmetric correlation

A correlation measure for two nonmetric variables which relies on rankings to compute the correlations.

Nonmetric data

Data derived from a nominal or ordinal scale.

Nonmetric MDS

A type of multidimensional scaling which assumes that the input data are ordinal.

Nonparametric tests

A hypothesis-testing procedure in which the variables are measured on a nominal or ordinal scale.

Nonprobability sampling

A sampling technique that relies on the judgement of the researcher.

Nonresponse bias

Bias attributable to the response difference in that portion of the sample which dos not respond to a questionnaire.

Nonresponse error

Nonsampling error that occurs when some of the respondents included in the sample do not respond; the variation between the true mean value of the variable in the original sample and the true mean value in the net sample.

Nonsampling error

Error attributable to sources other than sampling including nonresponse errors and response errors.

Normal distribution

A bell-shaped symmetric distribution whose mean, median, and mode are all identical. Null hypothesisA statement of no difference or no effect. If the null hypothesis is not rejected, no changes will be made.

N-way analysis of variance

An ANOVA technique that enables the researcher to examine interactions between the factors.
